Celebrating Canada Day and Session on Elder Abuse Awareness

Introduction

Canada Day reminds us that our strength as a nation comes from caring for one another and celebrating together. The Southlake Seniors Club proudly hosted a meaningful event celebrating Canada Day alongside an informative session on Elder Abuse Awareness. The program brought together seniors, non-seniors, volunteers, and distinguished guests in a spirit of unity, respect, and patriotism.

Opening Ceremony (11:00 – 11:45 AM)

The event commenced with a warm welcome and opening remarks from the Board Members:

The celebration began with the singing of “O Canada,” the national anthem of Canada, sung collectively by seniors, non-seniors, and all guests. This patriotic moment set a proud and emotional tone for the day.
Following the anthem, several cultural performances were presented:
 Ramaben – Performance
 Arun Bhatt and Varsha Shah – Performance
 Songs 1, 2, and 3 performed by senior members, including Bollywood songs and musical
performances by a senior couple.
Mr. Amit Bhatt officially welcomed all attendees and shared his appreciation for the seniors and volunteers who made the celebration possible.

Distinguished Guests

The event was honored by the presence of esteemed VIP guests and dignitaries:
 Mr. Paul Vicente – City Councillor
 Ms. Ruby Sahota – Member of Parliament, Brampton North–Caledon
 Ms. Rowena Santos – City Councillor
 Representative from the Brampton Mayor’s Office
All guests extended their Canada Day wishes and spoke about the pride of being Canadian, emphasizing unity, diversity, and community strength.

Session on Seniors Abuse Awareness (11:45 AM – 12:45 PM)

A dedicated session on Seniors Abuse Awareness (SAA) was conducted to educate and empower attendees.

Cultural Performances (12:45 – 1:15 PM)

The entertainment continued with lively and engaging performances:
 Harsha Ben – Performance

 Songs 4, 5, and 6
The audience thoroughly enjoyed the performances presented by both seniors and non-seniors.

Second Session on Seniors Abuse Awareness (1:15 – 2:15 PM)

Presenter: Mr. Surender Arora
Topic: Elder Abuse and Prevention
Mr. Surender Arora delivered an in-depth and highly informative session on elder abuse, presented in Hindi, making it accessible and engaging for the audience. His presentation lasted over an hour and included real-life examples and interactive discussion.
Key Topics Covered:
 Definition and seriousness of elder abuse
 Types of elder abuse:
o Physical Abuse
o Emotional/Psychological Abuse
o Sexual Abuse
o Neglect
o Financial Exploitation

 Common signs of elder abuse:
o Unexplained injuries
o Sudden behavioral changes
o Missing money or valuables
o Poor hygiene or untreated medical conditions

Prevention Strategies:
 Regularly checking in on seniors
 Educating seniors about scams and fraud
 Encouraging open communication
 Reporting concerns to trusted individuals or authorities
 Supporting caregivers to reduce stress and burnout
What to Do if Abuse Is Suspected:
 Inform a trusted family member or adult
 Contact local adult protection services
 Call 911 in emergencies
The session was very well received, and Mr. Arora patiently answered questions from the audience.

Special Talk and Entertainment

Later in the program, a yoga instructor was invited to speak about living as a good soul on Earth. His 20- minute talk was inspiring and received enthusiastic applause.
After a short break, the entertainment resumed with old Bollywood songs, performed by senior singers who presented approximately five songs, creating a joyful and nostalgic atmosphere.

Lunch (2:00 – 3:00 PM)

The host announced the lunch break, and seniors lined up to enjoy delicious food. The shared meal further strengthened social connections among attendees.

Conclusion

At the conclusion of the event, Mr. Amit Bhatti expressed his gratitude to everyone who participated and contributed, officially bringing the program to a close. Club members, the program coordinator, and volunteers worked together to successfully conclude the event. The audience also shared their appreciation and provided positive feedback to all members.
